Color Schemes and Wedding Themes

It was time to choose what colors I wanted to have at my wedding. This was kinda difficult because when flipping through multiple wedding magazines any color combination would almost work if you did it right. I came up with 5 different color combinations. Keep in mind that I chose the colors before I chose the date officially and the venues.

1. Orange and Purple
2. Purple and Green
3. Navy and Yellow
4. Red and Black
5. Pink and Yellow

Pink and yellow was automatically eliminated by Mike because it was way too girly. Red and black was typical in my mind because its easy to have red roses and black tux. It was traditional and something I didn't want in the end. Purple and green got eliminated by Mike because it was still a little too girly and that is how orange and purple got taken out too. So there we had it navy blue and yellow. The colors are classic and set each other off really well. Luckily these colors go really well in the month of May. We also used accents of white, ivory, and gold to complete the spring look.

Picking out a theme is a challenging ordeal. Ultimately, we want the theme to show how much Mike and I love each other. We both love nature and the outdoors. Now our wedding is indoors with the venues we chose. During the spring semester I took an ornithology (birds) class and really fell in love with it. Honestly, though if it were very much about me I would have the whole wedding be penguin themed. But I did get my way when it came to having the wedding be love bird theme.

For reception decorations, I choose to have the centerpieces be birdcages. We found these birdcages at local stores, yard sales, and craft stores. We gathered about 18 birdcages. I spray painted each of them gold to make them look uniformed and glamorous. I then wanted to have low lighting in the reception. I love the ideas of having candles. I knew that I would have children present at the wedding and I didn't want to take risks with any flames. I decided that flameless candles would be a great alternative and I could get them in melted wax pillars to look real. The reception hall would have white table linens and I wanted to have navy blue on the tables. My mother bought navy blue silk table runners to include the blue on the tables. I added mirrors to the tables to be placed under the groups of flameless candles to have the light reflected out. My centerpieces are simple and classic. Last minute, my mother made me add blue and white birds to some of the birdcages in order to fulfill the love bird theme. I agreed since she was helping with the payments. We added birds by spray painting wooden dowels and wire the same gold as the cages. We wired the dowels to the inside of the cages and anchored the birds. Centerpieces done! Here is a picture of what the cages looked like.

I also included the love bird theme in other areas of the wedding. For the wedding cake topper I found two porcelain doves that entwined with each other. Perfect! Then for the wedding guest book, there were two things that were used for guests to leave messages or their name. I had a finger print tree that Mike's mother had bought us and set up. The guest put some green paint on their finger, leave their print on the tree and then sign their name on the print. My mother-in-law did have wipes for guests to wipe the paint off. The second item we had is known as a wish tree. It was a bunch of lit branches in a vintage looking bird tin with gift tags of birds. The guests leave messages/wishes on the tags and hang them on the tree. It was really beautiful and now we have wishes for life. Pictures of the wish tree and the wedding cake topper are below.

  1. I loved the "love bird" theme. It was cute, looked great with your colors, and wasn't too much (you didn't stick birds on every single thing in your reception rooms). The birdcages were adorable!
